General Information for Online Application


1. Application Period
  1 September 2018 - 1 December 2018

2. Documents to be Submitted Together with the Application (Notes to Applicants)
 
(a) Photocopies
  - HKID card (for local applicants) or passport/other identity document of home country (for non-local applicants)
  - Degree certificate(s)/graduation diploma(s) AND transcript(s) for Academic Qualification(s) (in English)
  - A valid TOEFL/IELTS score (for applicants who graduated from universities where English is not the medium of instruction): The minimum requirement is IELTS 6.5/TOEFL 550 (PBT)/79(IBT)
  - Other Test Results (e.g.GRE/GMAT)/Professional Qualifications

(b)   Academic Referee's Report Form
    Applicants are required to invite two referees to complete the Academic Referee's Report Form. Proposed supervisor(s) from HKBU and persons from non-academic background are not considered as appropriate academic referees. Upon duly completion of the Form, kindly request them to send it directly to the Graduate School within two weeks from the date you submitted your application. Referees can send back their recommendations to the Graduate School (Address) by post or email (gs@hkbu.edu.hk). If you want to submit on their behalf, you have to post to us the signed forms sealed by your referees.
 
(c)   Confidential Recommendations from Past/Current Affiliated Institution (optional)
    Please go to the "Supporting Document" section to upload the copies under "Academic Qualifications".

3. Application Fee (Non-refundable)
Local : HK$350
Non-local : HK$450
(Non-local students are defined as persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa/entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration.)
  To complete the submission of your application, you are required to pay a non-refundable application fee for each online application through E-Payment. That is to pay on-line by credit card, either VISA, MASTER or CUP card. Otherwise the application will not be further processed.
 
Note 1 : If you would like to use the VISA/MASTER card to pay for the online application fee (non-refundable), please select E-Payment option and choose the BEA JETCO Payment Gateway.
Note 2 : If you would like to use the CUP card to pay for the online application fee (non-refundable), you are required to use Internet Explorer 7.0 or above to submit e-payment. Please select E-Payment option; then choose UnionPay Online Payment (UPOP).
Note 3 : If your online payment is not successful, please try the E-Payment method again later. All applicants who have successfully submitted their online application forms will receive an acknowledgement e-mail message from the University as confirmation.

4. Application Acknowledgement
  After you have submitted the application, an application acknowledgement note with an application number will be sent to you by email. Please check the accuracy of your application data and report any discrepancies immediately in writing to the Graduate School. You are advised to quote your application number in all subsequent correspondence with the University.

5. Change in Personal Particulars After Submission of Application
  During the application period, applicants should report changes in personal particulars such as correspondence address, contact number(s), etc. to the Graduate School in writing immediately.

6. Notification of Results
  Results of HKPFS will be announced in late March 2019 at the website of Research Grants Council (RGC). Please click HERE for details. Individual awardee will receive an email notification direct from RGC.

7. Student Visa
  The Hong Kong Immigration Department requires all full-time non-local students (from overseas or the Mainland China) to obtain a student visa in order to study in Hong Kong. Applications should normally be made at least two months in advance through the University. Applicants will be informed of the details once they are given the admission offer. (Part-time non-local students should possess appropriate and valid visa to prove their eligibility to stay and study in Hong Kong.)

1. Application
  Please note that the University is currently admitting PhD students concurrently for the 3-year PhD programme for academic year 2018/19 (the last cohort), and the new 4-year PhD programme (starting from AY2019/20).
  When considering your application, the *Faculties/Schools/Academy concerned will recommended the PhD programme you will be offered for admission, i.e. 3 year or 4-year.
  * The School of Business offers only 4-year PhD programme. Its application period is from 1 September 2018 - 1 December 2018.
  MPhil admission follows the above timeline for admission.

  - For Faculty of Science and School of Chinese Medicine, consideration will also be made for applicants with a minimum overall score in the College English Test (CET) Band 6 at 500 and grade B in the CET-SET (Speaking English Test).
  - Open Tests Results (e.g. GRE/GMAT/MCIL/TEM/CET6)
  - Hong Kong Public Examination Results (e.g. HKCEE/HKALE) (if any)
  - Certificate(s)/supporting document(s) for Scholarship(s)/Prize(s)/Professional Qualification(s)
  - Sample(s) of publication or research work/record of research experience/publication list
 
Note 1 - Upon receipt of the admission offer, applicants should arrange the official transcript(s) for the academic qualification(s) to be sent directly by the original institution(s) to the Graduate School, Hong Kong Baptist University bearing all academic records of undergraduate and/or postgraduate studies to date.
 
Note 2 - HKBU graduates/students would be exempted from submitting certificate(s) and transcript(s) for their previous/current studies in the University.
Note 3 - Please go to the "Supporting Document" section to upload your documents. Do not send hard copies as it may delay your process.
 
 #  Non-local applicants applying for part-time postgraduate courses should provide appropriate and valid visa to prove their eligibility to stay and study in Hong Kong.

  Applicants who are selected for interview/written examination will receive an individual notification by email/phone.
  Applicants who are offered admission to a programme will receive individual notification by mail and email. If an admission offer is made, applicants must decide whether or not to accept the offer by a specified date. To accept the offer, applicants are required to pay the confirmation fee (non-refundable) by a specified deadline. Applicants being put on the waiting list or fail to be given an offer will also be informed of the application result in writing.

7. Student Visa
  The Hong Kong Immigration Department requires all full-time non-local students (from overseas or the Mainland China) to obtain a student visa in order to study in Hong Kong. (b) Confidential Reference
 
  Applicants are requested to nominate up to two referees for providing confidential references. The Graduate School will invite referees via email to complete and upload a Confidential Reference Form (here) to a designated online platform within two weeks from the date of successful submission of the application. To avoid delay in processing the application, applicants are reminded to check the accuracy of the referees' information (e.g. email address, contact number) and follow up with the referee(s) as appropriate.

3. Application Fee (Non-refundable)

  Applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee for each online application. Otherwise, the application will not be further processed. Please settle the fee by one of the following methods:
 
(a) Make an online payment by using VISA/MASTER card or CUP card during your application process (use the browser Internet Explorer 7.0 or above) by following the steps below:
   
(i) Click the "Submit Form" button and select "E-Payment" in the "Form Submission" Section.
(ii) Choose BEA JETCO Payment Gateway (for VISA/MASTER card) or UnionPay Online Payment (for CUP card).
(iii) Confirm the payment.
 
(b)   Other payment methods:
   
(i) Pay with Octopus Card at the service counter of the Graduate School.
(ii) Use the "HKD Account Deposit Form" which is obtainable at any branch office of the Hang Seng Bank. Applicants must clearly fill out the details as requested and mail us the original receipt. Please click "Sample - HKD Account Deposit Form" to view the necessary information. Applicants are advised to keep a copy of the receipt for reference if necessary.
(iii) Complete the "Credit Card Payment Form" and send it to the Graduate School via Enquiry form.

4. Student Visa
  The Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government requires all full-time non-local studentsi to obtain a student visa in order to study in Hong Kong. The University will sponsor full-time non-local students from mainland China, Macau and Taiwan, and other overseas countries to apply for their student visa once they accept the admission offer. Newly admitted non-local students will be required to complete the application procedures through the University Student Visa Application System. Please click here for more information. 5. Application Acknowledgement
  Upon successful submission of the application, an acknowledgement email will be sent to the applicant. Applicants should read the email and check the information carefully. If there is any discrepancy, please report immediately to Graduate School via Enquiry form. Applicants should quote their full name and application number in all subsequent correspondence with the University.

i Non-local students are defined as persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa/entry permit issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government.
 
ii Upon receipt of the admission offer, applicants are required to arrange to send the official transcript(s) of the academic qualification(s) to the Graduate School directly by the awarding institution(s)/authorities. HKBU graduates/students are exempted from submitting the official transcript(s) for their previous/current studies in the University.
 
iii Individual programmes may stipulate different language proficiency requirements, or equivalent acceptable qualifications, suitable for their fields of study. For programme specific entrance requirements, please refer to the Graduate School website for details.
